Ingredients

For our recipe, we use the following ingredients. You can adjust our measurements or include more ingredients to suit your preference. The goal is to create a banana bread that leaves tantalizing memories and one that you always look forward to remaking.

  • 3 Mashed Bananas: As you can tell, this is a banana bread recipe. So, these sweet berries are the key ingredient in this high altitude banana bread recipe.
  • ½ Cup Sour Cream: We use sour cream to add flavor, moisture, and tanginess to our banana bread.
  • ½ Cup Brown Sugar: Besides adding moisture, sugar will also sweeten your banana bread. We recommend brown sugar because it gives the bread a nice golden-brown color.
  • ½ Cup Granulated Sugar: This is optional.
  • 2 Large Eggs: These add structure and richness to your batter.
  • 2 Tbsp Vanilla Extract: While this is optional, we recommend using it to enhance the bread's flavor.
  • 5 Tbsp Unsalted Butter: This ingredient will moisten your bread and add some buttery taste. If you don't have butter, you can use vegetable oil.
  • 2 Cups All-purpose Flour: Use your favorite all-purpose flour for the batter.
  • ½ Tbsp Salt: Helps balance the sugar's sweetness.
  • ¾ Tbsp Baking Soda: Don't leave out baking powder for puffy bread since it helps the batter to leaven, enabling it to rise.
  • 1 Tbsp Baking Powder
  • ½ Tbsp Ground Cinnamon
  • Tbsp Cardamom
  • ¼ Tbsp Nutmeg

Instructions

  • Whisk the Wet Ingredients: Melt your butter and put it in a large mixing bowl. Next, mash the bananas and add them to the bowl. Add sour cream, beaten eggs, and vanilla; mix until everything is well incorporated.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients: Sift baking soda, flour, spices, and your selected spices. Add these ingredients to the wet ones and mix until moistened. Avoid over-mixing since it will make your bread tough. You want fluffy and tender banana bread.
  • Bake your Banana Bread: First, prepare your baking pan by slightly drizzling some oil and flour to prevent your bread from sticking. If you have parchment paper, this is not necessary. Instead, line your pan with the paper. Pour the batter to the pan and bake for 45 minutes in an oven preheated to 350F degrees. Besides the aroma, you can tell if the bread is ready by inserting a toothpick or fork.

Notes

  • We spice our banana bread with cardamom, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Feel free to try any spices, but ensure they don’t overpower the other flavors in your banana bread.
  • You can bake your banana bread in advance, wrap it in a plastic bag, and freeze it for 3 months.

High Altitude Banana Bread Recipe Variations

The kitchen is one of the places you can try out as many things as possible. This recipe gives you the power to try out different spices and seeds. Below are some variations we’d recommend.

  • Add chocolate chips or nuts: If you love nuts, such as pecans, almonds, and walnuts, you can add a few to this recipe. Chocolate chips perfectly complement this recipe.
  • Try crumb toppings: Although this banana bread tastes great on its own, adding crumb toppings gives it a crunchy texture and tangy-sweet flavor that we find lovely.
  • Drizzle some icing: A powdered sugar glaze over your banana bread will elevate its flavor. Maple or vanilla icing would be excellent options.
  • Double the ingredients: You might not get enough of this savory banana bread. Doubling the recipe ensures everyone gets enough, and more is left for later.
  • Use a quality loaf pan: Baking your loaf in a quality loaf pan leaves you with beautiful bread. On the same note, quality ingredients deliver outstanding results, giving you the morale to bake more and more.
  • Fruit: You can add a fruity finish to your banana bread to make it more flavorful and appealing. Diced apples, chopped peaches, and fresh or frozen berries will give the bread extra texture and flavor.
